For twenty-plus years, “SEO” meant one thing: rank higher on Google’s blue links. That’s no longer the whole picture. A growing share of how people find answers now happens inside AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google’s own AI Overviews — which summarize and cite sources rather than just listing links. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so those systems can find, understand, and cite you.
How AEO Is Different From Traditional SEO
Traditional SEO optimizes for a search engine’s ranking algorithm and a human scanning a results page. AEO optimizes for a language model trying to extract a clear, well-supported answer to a specific question. The two overlap heavily — good AEO is built on a foundation of good SEO — but AEO puts extra weight on a few specific things:
- Direct, extractable answers. Content that clearly states an answer near the top of a section, rather than burying it in marketing language, is easier for an AI system to lift and cite.
- Structured, well-organized content. Clear headings, defined terms, comparison tables, and FAQ sections give language models clean “chunks” of information to work with.
- Credible, specific detail. Vague claims get filtered out. Specific, well-explained information is more likely to be treated as a trustworthy source.
- Structured data (schema markup). Marking up your content with schema (Organization, FAQPage, Article, Product, etc.) gives machines explicit signals about what your content is and means, beyond what they infer from text alone.
- Consistency across the web. AI systems often cross-reference information about a business across multiple sources. Consistent, accurate information about who you are and what you do — on your site, directories, and social profiles — matters more than it used to.
Why This Matters Now
People increasingly ask an AI assistant a question instead of typing a search query and clicking through several links. If your business isn’t structured to be understood and cited by those systems, you can be doing everything right by old SEO standards and still be invisible in a growing share of how your customers actually search.
This doesn’t replace traditional SEO — it sits on top of it. You still need technical fundamentals: fast load times, mobile-friendly design, clean URLs, and solid on-page basics. AEO is the next layer above that foundation.
Practical Steps to Start
- Answer real questions directly. For each service or product, write a section that plainly answers the question a customer would actually ask (“What does X cost?”, “How long does Y take?”) in the first sentence or two.
- Add FAQ sections with schema markup to your key pages, using the actual questions your customers ask.
- Keep your business information consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, and any directories you’re listed in.
- Build genuinely informative content — guides, comparisons, and explainers — rather than purely promotional pages. AI systems (like search engines before them) favor content that actually helps the reader.
AEO is still an emerging discipline, and best practices will keep evolving as these AI systems change. But the businesses structuring their content for this shift now will have a real head start over those who wait until it’s obvious in hindsight.
